Summary
Laniakea is a hawaiian word that means 'immense heaven', 'open skies', or 'wide horizons'. It also refers to the supercluster of galaxies that includes the Milky Way. While studying abroad in Central Saint Martins, I continued this 96 page book about the past, present, and future of space exploration and wonder. I experimented with layout design and experimenting with fabric textures from the CSM special textures library. I also assembled writings and conducted my own written interviews.
Adding texture and vibrance
Stunning images that emerged from the Webb telescope are what inspired me to create this piece. I began the project at Pratt with book maps and intensive research for the contents. This and layouts were under the direction of Michael Kelly. When I arrived at Central Saint Martins, I rediscovered my love for purposeful texture and grounding materials to make the book come to life.
Book Maps
These final versions of the book were created in three versions: 120 pages, 150 pages, and the 92 page version that ended up being the final form.
Board planning and iterations
Thanks to this project, I've developed a process where I meticulously document and plan each step of the way. A calendar with deadlines, chapter sourcing compilations, and so much more were kept track of on Milanote.
Book assembly
Collaborating with book-making experts at Central Saint Martins, I learned how to french press a book by hand. We spent a great amount of time deciding on page thickness and covers as a true labor of love.
Final book photoshoot
A proud collection of fascinating space research and a take on the human spirit in the face of the unknown.
Web design
The rebrand included homepage design and was worked into the following mockups to show bold and fearless models exuding our mission, which is to bring confidence to a young spirit through skincare and makeup products.
Mood boards and creative inspiration
Incorporating illustrations into the final brand
The process of brainstorming Celestia included lots of fun collaging and early-stage ideation.
I combined hand-drawn illustrations with my own photography to keep the branding lighthearted and fun. The logo is hand-drawn, along with other key assets.
